The SEMI Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG) has just released its quarterly analysis of the silicon wafer industry. It reports that global silicon wafer shipments have increased by 5.9% quarter-over-quarter to 3,214 million square inches (MSI) in Q3 2024 and registered a 6.8% growth from the 3,010 MSI recorded during Q3 2023.
Demand for advanced wafers used for artificial intelligence continues to be strong as opposed to demand for automotive and industrial applications that continues to be muted. Demand for silicon used for handset and other consumer products has improved. We can expect 2025 to continue with upward trends, but total shipments are not yet expected to return to the peak levels of 2022.
