IC INSIGHTS REPORT: 83 FABS CLOSED OR REPURPOSED BETWEEN 2009 AND 2014

In its latest Global Wafer Capacity 2015-2019 research, semiconductor market research company IC Insights reports that IC manufacturers closed or repurposed 83 wafer fabs from 2009 to 2014 and that 150mm and 200mm wafer fabs account for two-thirds of total closures. The research also highlights that 41% of fab closures since 2009 have been 150mm fabs and 27% have been 200mmfabs. Qimonda was the first company to close a 300mm wafer fab after it went out of business in early 2009.

Wafer trayDid you know that of the 36 200mm and 300mm fabs that have been sold for adaptive re-use in the last five years, ATREG was involved either as an exclusive agent or an advisor working on three of the eight 300mm fab sales and eight of the 22 200mm fab dispositions? ATREG was involved as advisor on 13 of these dispositions – two 150mm fabs, eight 200mm fabs, and three 300mm fabs.

Key transactions involved selling both Qimonda fabs located in Richmond, USA and Dresden, Germany as well as the Renesas 300mm Yamagata fab to Sony. ATREG has taken great pride in selling eight fabs for their intended use, thus keeping viable manufacturing assets and workforces in place.

We invite you to contact us for your next fab acquisition or disposition project.
